CHIEF OFFICER (Chief Mate)

Job Purpose:

The Chief Mate serves as the head of the deck department and is second-in-command after the Captain. This role is responsible for supervising deck operations, ensuring vessel safety, and managing cargo and stability. The Chief Mate plays a vital role in maintaining compliance with international maritime standards and supporting the overall efficiency of vessel operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the deck department.
  • Supervise cargo operations (where applicable).
  • Oversee maintenance of hull, deck, and safety equipment.
  • Perform stability calculations and manage ballast operations.
  • Act as Safety Officer onboard, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Supervise Able Seamen (ABs) and deck ratings.
  • Support the Captain in navigation, emergency drills, and operational planning.

Required Documents & Certifications

  • Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Chief Mate (Reg. II/2)
  • Flag State Endorsement (for foreign licence holders)
  • Radar/ARPA & ECDIS certification
  • Bridge Resource Management (BRM)
  • Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft
  • STCW Basic Safety certification
  • Valid Medical Certificate
  • Seaman’s Book and Passport
  • Security Awareness Certificate

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum required sea-time experience as a deck officer.
  • Strong knowledge of cargo handling, vessel stability, and deck operations.
  • Experience in supervising crew and managing safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with international maritime conventions and offshore operations.
